Human health and performance are broad terms that describe the quality of life but are difficult to quantify. Human health can be broadly identified by two components: physical health and mental health. While there is no "official" definition for mental health (considering cultural differences and subjective assessments), physical health is typically attributed to health of various body organs including muscles, bones, and joints. Human performance can be considered as "focused behavior" or "purposeful work" and hence performance is typically domain specific such as sports performance, or performance of a physically challenged person.

SIGMM Award - from Chair of the SIGMM Awards Committee

SIGMM Award for Outstanding Technical Contributions to Multimedia Computing, Communications and Applications

The 2008 winner of the prestigious ACM Special Interest Group on Multimedia Award for Outstanding Technical Contributions to Multimedia Computing, Communications and Applications is Professor Ralf Steinmetz from the Technical University Darmstadt in Germany. Professor Steinmetz receives this award "for pioneering work in multimedia communications and the fundamentals of multimedia synchronization". The SIGMM award will be given to Professor Steinmetz at the ACM International Conference on Multimedia 2008 in October.

MULTIMEDIA RETRIEVAL Competition

ZDNet Asia (Singapore, Oct. 23) ―

For winning the Star Challenge 2008 on Thursday, the team comprising three researchers at the National University of Singapore Lab for Media Search walked away with $100,000 and the honor of having the most efficient multimedia retrieval technology. Apart from the NUS, teams from the United State's University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, China's Peking University, France's Laboratoire d'Informatique de Grenoble and Japan's National Institute of Informatics made it to the final round. The challenge was organized by Singapore's Agency for Science, Technology and Research.
